Water mains
The water to your house is pumped under the streets of Auckland from the water supplier, under mains pressure. Your water meter is at the point where the water for your house is tapped off the main supply and sent down your personal water main pipe to supply the plumbing for your house, or in some cases, for a block of houses or flats.
For many people, the first indication of a leaking water main is an exceptionally high water bill. This means the pipe between the meter and the house has begun to leak, and will usually get progressively worse, therefore requires immediate attention. Causes of water leaks range from tree roots, pipe deterioration, stones, badly installed mains, and leaking joins.
The first thing we'll do is establish where the water leak is coming from. In the cases of leaks under grass, this is simple, as the grass or garden will be mushy and obviously damp. However, if the leak is under concrete, we will employ the services of a leak detection company, who use listening devices to establish where the point of water leakage is, before we will arrange to cut the concrete to gain access and repair.
Who is responsible for repairing a water main? Unfortunately, it's usually the householder. If the leak is anywhere between your meter and your house, it's your responsibility. If the leak is beyond the meter, i.e. on the street or pavement, it is the council's responsibility, but this is less common.
Water Meters
Many houses in Auckland are not individually metered, meaning they share a common meter with other houses in their cross-lease, subdivision or block of flats or units. This means the usage of all attached dwellings is split evenly between the houses. It's becoming increasingly popular to split water meters so that each dwelling can accurately measure and maintain their own water usage and therefore potentially save money.
